Tourist attractions

While the usual beaches and tourist attractions are available on your trip to Lagos, there are plenty of other sites to see that capture the spirit of this vibrant city. For art lovers, a visit to the African Artist’s Foundation during their trip to Lagos is an excellent introduction to the rising stars of African art, while the National Museum has a small crafts village attached where visitors can watch artisans at work.

If you need a break from the frantic pace of life in the city, book yourself a trip around the coast’s ‘grottos’ – a series of delightful inlets hidden between dramatic stacks sculpted by the sea. Back on land, Lagos still has much of its original city walls left intact, and these dramatic structures are particularly well preserved in places. There are also plenty of museums, as well as several locations that hark back to colonial times.

Leisure activities

The Lekki Conservation Centre is a worthwhile excursion during your trip to Lagos. This extensive park captures the essence of the Nigerian landscape and lets visitors immerse themselves in the experience. The beaches of Lagos are popular for swimming, water sports or simple relaxation; hop on a boat trip to Tarkwa Beach, which is devoid of the usual tourist trap souvenir sellers and the perfect place for a peaceful picnic.

Like any major city, Lagos has its fair share of galleries and museums to explore. Of particular note is the Nike Art Gallery that showcases both contemporary and traditional Nigerian arts and crafts. The National Theatre of Arts & Culture, located about an hour from Lagos at Iganmu-Surulere, is the venue to head for if you want to experience the best in Nigerian dance, theatre and performing arts.

Eating in Lagos

Travel to Lagos and you’ll discover a city that draws its culinary influences from a variety of sources. Nigerian favourites such as Tsire – meat kebabs that have a coating of peanut or chilli and spices – and international cuisine from France, the Arab peninsula and India all jostle for position.

Food in Lagos is all about a shared experience and plenty of flavour. Look for restaurants that offer diners the chance to taste a variety of Nigerian dishes. Expect plenty of side dishes that include dodo (fried plantain), coconut flavoured rice and millet pancakes known as Funkaso.

Shopping in Lagos

Anyone travelling to Lagos will find that this vibrant city is a shopper’s paradise, with everything from air-conditioned, modern malls sporting the latest in designer brands, through to bustling markets. For souvenirs with a distinctly Nigerian theme, look out in boutique shops and markets for carvings and calabashes.

Njoku St on the western side of Falomo Shopping Centre in Ikoyi is the place to buy batik cloth and clothing from street vendors. For mall shopping, the Palms Shopping centre has nearly 70 outlets, selling everything from high-end luxury goods and brands to local independent boutiques.
