Unlike many other Asian capitals, Phnom Penh is notable for its peacefulness – with serene green spaces and quiet boulevards. Popular places to visit include the magnificent Royal Palace, the National Museum and awe-inspiring traditional temples. As the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh is also a key commercial hub, welcoming business travellers and tourists with characteristic Cambodian hospitality.
Bright, modern and currently handling around 22million passengers a year, Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport demonstrates just how quickly this thriving location is developing and growing on the international stage.
Passengers flying from Ho Chi Minh City with Qatar Airways will experience a vibrant and efficient air hub, where the emphasis is placed squarely on the passenger experience. Staff are friendly and incredibly helpful, while the airport’s layout makes it easy to navigate your way around.
Parking and transportation
Buses and taxis run regularly from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City to the airport. However, be wary of unofficial taxis, and ensure that your taxi is operated by either Mai Linh or Vinasun.
Hotels in the centre of the city will be happy to pre-book taxis or limousine services to the airport on your behalf. Bus 152 runs from Ben Thanh Market in the city centre to the airport, and there may be an additional charge if you have a lot of luggage. Parking for both short and long-term stays is located immediately outside the airport entrance.
Arriving at Tan Son Nhat International Airport
Passengers flying from Ho Chi Minh City depart from the International terminal (Terminal 2). This is a relatively new terminal and as such facilities such as check in counters, boarding areas and departure lounges are spacious, efficient and very clean. A VIP lounge is available for first and business class travellers.
Facilities and amenities
ATMs and a Bureau de Change is available, and while there isn’t a huge choice of retail and shopping outlets, the quality of the shops that are available is exceptionally good, with local souvenirs, luxury leather goods and duty free all available.
There are a number of food vendors selling Vietnamese cuisine and some restaurants serving more international menus, but be aware that the choice becomes more limited once you have gone through security. Wi-Fi is available in some areas.
For many years known as the ‘Paris of the East’, today Phnom Penh is regaining its stature on the world stage as a capital city that welcomes and enchants visitors from all over the planet.
A complex and quirky city full of unexpected sites and filled with warm, welcoming people, Phnom Penh is now also turning into a commercial powerhouse that is embracing international commerce with open arms.
Book a flight to Phnom Penh and discover a city full of juxtapositions between ultra-modern developments and traditional culture, with a distinctly French Colonial undertone that can still be seen in its architecture.
The Royal Palace has to be on every visitor’s itinerary, with not one but two stunning pagodas within its grounds; the Silver Pagoda and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
These were in fact built in the 19th century using French technology and traditional Cambodian designs, making them an interesting mix of two very distinctive cultures. Note that no photography is allowed inside the Silver Pagoda, and visitors are expected to dress respectfully.
The National Museum of Cambodia gives visitors a fascinating insight into the culture and history of the country, from ancient times through to more recent events.
Its main attraction is a rather fine statue of the 12th century ruler King Jayavarman VII, as well as a host of artefacts and magnificent art from the country’s ‘golden age’.
Just outside the city is Wat Phnom, a tranquil open space with an ancient temple at its heart. The park is home to a troop of monkeys, who can be quite cheeky and steal visitors’ drinks if they leave them unattended.
