Medina is the second-holiest city in Islam, and a cultural centre of huge international importance. This sacred city is commonly visited by Muslims as part of the Hajj, making it central to the religion of millions of people around the world. Visitors are asked to bear in mind the holiness of the city and behave with due reverence whilst here.
Beyond the centre of the city, which is only accessible to Muslims, lies the outskirts of Medina – an area popular with business travellers and visitors who want to experience this fascinating city for themselves. Book a flight to Medina with Qatar Airways and discover one of the world’s holiest locations for yourself.
It is perhaps a little inappropriate to describe the main locations in Medina as ‘Tourist’ attractions, as they have far more relevance as religious locations than simple photo opportunities. For Muslims, the main destination is the Masjid Nabawi or Prophet's Mosque. Devotions for men and women are at set times, with men allowed to visit the burial site of the Prophet.
Next to the mosque is the huge burial ground of Jannatul Baqi, the final resting place of the family and companions of the Prophet. It is a tranquil and peaceful location in what can be an incredibly busy and noisy city.
Beyond the city walls are the mountains of Uhud where the great battle took place, as well as the final resting place of the 70 Martyrs of the battle, including the Prophet’s uncle Hamza. Another key location and one that is central to the faith of Islam is Masjid Qiblatayen where the Prophet was ordered by Allah to turn his face from Masjid Aqsa in Jerusalem, and instead face east to the Kaaba in Makkah to pray.
Flights to Medina with Qatar Airways land at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter central Medina, but the airport and the outskirts of the city are open to everyone. Before you fly to Medina please check the visa and passport requirements.
