Surrounded by dramatic sand dunes and the vast open spaces of the Arabian Desert, Dammam Airport (known as King Fahd International Airport) is truly vast with six levels housing a huge selection of facilities, check-in desks, lounges and porter services.
Transportation and parking
The airport has a multi-storey car park attached to it. On the roof of this car park, you can find a mosque, which can be accessed from the passenger terminal through two enclosed, air-conditioned bridges and an additional open bridge.
The airport is around 50 kilometres from Dammam city centre, but is well served by frequent bus links and taxis. Carrier SAPTCO runs shuttle buses between the airport and the bus station every hour. The trip takes around 45 minutes. Taxis are available and are located in the rank outside the main entrance. A limousine service is also available.
Arriving at King Fahd International Airport
There is only one terminal at the airport, but it is vast. Departure check-in is located on Level 6, while boarding gates are on Level 4.
Facilities and amenities
King Fahd International Airport was the first in Saudi Arabia to open duty-free shops within its airport. There is a separate area dedicated to shops selling goods that passengers might find useful during their travels, and in the arrivals area you will also find plenty of cafés, restaurants and banks.
ATMs and currency exchange points are available in the departure and arrival areas. For a light meal with a view, head to the fourth floor (above check-in), where you'll find an observation deck and a café serving a buffet selection of food.
Iran’s holiest city is a remarkable destination for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. This ancient city has a pivotal role in one of the world’s major religions, making it a key location on the cultural map of the Middle East.
Its location in the heart of the Khorasan province means that Mashhad benefits from year-round cool temperatures. Book a flight to Mashhad with Qatar Airways and you’ll discover a vibrant and welcoming destination that also provides a fascinating insight into the Shi'ite culture.
The most important location in the city is the Imran Reza shrine, one of the holiest sites to shi'ite Muslims after the Holy Kaaba in Saudi Arabia and Karbala in Iraq. Please note that photography at the shrine is strictly forbidden.
Like many cities in Iran, Mashhad has some beautifully tranquil open spaces, representing the importance of natural beauty and gardening in particular to the Persian culture.
These parks also tend to be home to the tombs of important historical figures, such as the tomb of Nadir Shah. Mellat Park also has some more modern attractions for children such as the tallest Ferris wheel or fanfar in Iran, while Koohestan Park-e-Shadi Complex includes a well-run zoo.
The tomb of Khajeh Rabi' is located 6km north of the city, where you will also find some beautifully preserved inscriptions by the renowned Safavid calligrapher Reza Abbasi.
As you travel around the city you will notice a number of sculptures. Mashhad has a history of public art, which is celebrated every year around Norouz, the Iranian New Year. Each year, the city's artists gather together in a competition to capture the best city element of Norouz in sculpture. The winner’s sculpture will remain in situ for the rest of the year, with other pieces dotted around the city’s parks.
