Fly to Rome with Qatar Airways and explore some of Europe’s most iconic sights such as the Coliseum, Vatican museums and the imposing Forum. Michelangelo’s frescos in the Sistine Chapel are still breathtaking, and there’s a world of upmarket shopping and dining to enjoy here too.
Australia’s fifth busiest airport is modern, well equipped and designed to enhance the customers’ experience from the moment they check in. Situated just 6km from the city centre, the airport is right next to West Beach, a seaside suburb of the city itself.
Characterized by quiet efficiency, the atmosphere at the airport lays the ground for a comfortable journey ahead, making it a very pleasant starting point for customers flying from Adelaide with Qatar Airways. The opening of a new terminal in 2005 led to a cluster of awards, including the airport being named the world’s second-best airport (5-15 million passengers), as well as Australia’s best capital city airport in 2006, 2009 and 2011.
Transportation and parking
The airport is well served by both buses and taxis, which are plentiful, frequent and very well priced. Buses J1 and J2 run to and from the city centre every 15 minutes, while taxis can be pre-ordered by your hotel concierge. The journey time from the city centre to the airport is around 15-20 minutes, depending on the time of day (morning and evening rush hour traffic can cause delays). A multi-storey short-term car park is located outside the main passenger terminal, while long-stay parking is available a little further out, and is served by a shuttle to the terminals every 20 minutes.
At the airport
Customers flying from Adelaide with Qatar Airways depart from the main departure area in the passenger terminal. Indicator boards will give you directions as to which boarding gate your flight leaves from, and be aware that security checks at the airport are very tight. Allow between one and two hours to check-in and clear security.
Facilities and amenities
Business travellers can find a well-equipped business centre on Level 1 offering photocopying, fax and internet services. Elsewhere, free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport, and there are coin-operated internet kiosks on Level 2.
A wide variety of cafés, snack bars and restaurants serve everything from on-the-go food to more substantial meals, as well as drinks and light snacks. The shopping outlets are plentiful, and there are Duty Free outlets on Levels 1 and 2. A prayer room for devotions is available in the departure area, and there is also a kid’s play area for younger children.
If you want to experience everything that Rome has to offer but want a little bit of individuality thrown into the mix, book a flight to Fiumicino with Qatar Airways and discover an often-overlooked part of this beautiful region. Originally a simple fishing village just a few miles from the historic capital, Fiumicino is today an attractive destination loved by locals and travellers in the know.
A much more tranquil and sedate pace of life lulls you into a relaxed state of mind, and if you want the vibrancy and energy of Rome then it’s only a short drive away. But there is plenty in this pretty location to keep you interested and amused.
The biggest attraction in the area is the ancient Roman settlement of Ostia Antica, the historic ancestor of the modern town. This bay area at the mouth of the Tiger river is picturesque and a haven for wildlife, making it a serene change from the usual tourist destinations.
One of the more unusual attractions is a small mud volcano that popped into existence on the Coccia di Morto roundabout in 2013! Although currently dormant, local geologists (and road cleaners) are keeping a careful eye on it just in case it becomes active again.
Shopping in Fiumicino is surprisingly good, and if you don’t want to fight through the crowds in nearby Rome then there is plenty to buy in the new Malo Moda mall or the smaller boutiques in the town itself. The main ingredient to any trip to Fiumicino is relaxation – a visit to this location is a welcome change from the frenetic pace of life in nearby Rome.
Flights to Fiumicino with Qatar Airways land at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. Before you fly to Fiumicino please check the visa and passport requirements.
