OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Qatar Airways is committed to improving the world for future generations.

We already command one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in the industry and we’ll be one of the first airlines to operate the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner - the most efficient aircraft in the world.

But that's not all we're doing, below are a few more ways we're tackling climate change.

Fuel optimisation

Our Fuel Optimisation department’s primary focus is to identify ways to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. This includes:

  • Researching reduced aircraft weight
  • More economical flight routes
  • Takeoff and landing procedures
  • Engine wash options
  • Aerodynamic efficiency
  • On-ground aircraft power alternatives
  • and much more.

Environmental protection

Our dedicated Environmental Department explores how to reduce usage of water, paper, and other materials. Our next big advancement is to recycle waste onboard and in airports. Meanwhile, travellers can look forward to the completion of the New Doha International Airport (NDIA—a masterpiece in environmental engineering.

The Aviation Global Deal Group (AGD Group)

International aviation emissions and their impact on climate change are a global concern. As a partner of the Aviation Global Deal Group, we recognize the aviation sector’s responsibility to assist global efforts to reduce emissions. Together, we are striving to develop a fair, practical, and effective solution to address aviation emissions in a new global climate change agreement.

European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS)

We are preparing to comply with the European Union Emissions Trading System, which aims to cost-effectively reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions. The system will begin to include airlines at the start of 2012.

International Air Transport Association – Environment Committee (IATA ENCOM)

In June 2009, Qatar Airways was elected to the Environment Committee of the International Air Transport Association, the world’s foremost airline trade association. As a member of IATA ENCOM, we are working with the entire airline industry to help reduce its impact on the environment.
