About Kozhikode:
Kozhikode represents the Malabar coastal region of Kerala, one of the most tourist-friendly states of India. The culture and cuisine of the city presents a surprising tapestry woven with diverse influences from around the world.

Calicut, the anglicised version of Kozhikode, gave its name to a kind of cotton cloth block-printed with typically bright and colourful designs. Initially a famous export from Kozhikode to England, the name Calico soon came to represent all printed cotton cloth from India with a certain type of warp and weft.

Culture:
Some of the folk songs of the region are a curious composite of Arabic and Malayalam, the local language, evoking the historic ties enjoyed by the seaport with traders and seafarers from Arabia.

Cuisine:
Halwa is one of Kozhikode’s most popular sweet dishes, often called “sweet meat” by European traders. The city’s mercantile tradition meets its unique cuisine in Sweet Meat Street or Mithai Theruvu, which is one of the commercial centres of Kozhikode. Kozhikode is also well known for its banana chips.

When you fly Qatar Airways to or from Kozhikode, you can expect our award-winning 5-star service. We look forward to serving you the next time your travels take you to the beautiful state of Kerala.

Things To Do

Beaches
Most of Kozhikode’s attractions are located on its beaches. Kappad Beach, a few kilometres from the city, is a part of history because it was here that Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese seafarer landed opening up a whole new era of trade. A monument on the beach commemorates the historic landing. Besides these there is Kozhikode Beach easily accessible within the city and another beach called Dolphin’s Point, quite near the city centre, its main attractions being an aquarium and a lighthouse.

Boats
Beypore is a quaint fishing port which was once renowned for building boats and ships for over 1,500 years. Situated a few kilometres from Kozhikode, this fishing town is an ideal picnic spot with natural scenic beauty, relics of old trading vessels and a lively fishing community.

Birds
Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, about 25 km from the city, is a haven for bird lovers. Some of the migratory birds that flock to the sanctuary include terns, gulls, herons and sandpipers.
