Book a flight to Nairobi from Qatar with Qatar Airways

Kenya’s capital and largest city is also its fastest growing tourist destination. The growing number of flights to Nairobi now available from international locations means that more people are discovering this jewel in Africa’s crown. Book a flight to Nairobi with Qatar Airways to experience everything from traditional culture and markets, to spectacular waterfalls and safari adventures.

By night you’ll have the chance to discover its vibrant nightlife, while by day you can immerse yourself in the city’s café culture.

Tourist attractions

Within the city itself you’ll find an array of museums and other cultural attractions, including the Nairobi National Museum and the Nairobi Galley. Those interested in the country’s historic railway network can learn more at the National Railway Museum, while Bomas of Kenya provides insights into local culture through traditional exhibits, dances and other performances.

Many who make the trip to Nairobi though use the city as a base for exploring the attractions that lie on its doorstep. Nairobi National Park is located just outside of the city and provides an unparalleled African wildlife experience.

The park is unique by being the only protected area in the world with a variety of animals and birds close to a capital city. While on safari, you’ll get the chance to glimpse lions, hippos, giraffes and other iconic species in their natural habitats. Related natural attractions in the area include the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, which are on the frontlines of Kenya’s conservation efforts.

Leisure activities

Aside from exploring Kenya’s beautiful natural surroundings and wildlife, a visit to the Maasai Market is an essential stop on any trip to Nairobi. There you’ll find a mind-boggling variety of local crafts, ranging from art and curios, to traditional clothing and jewellery. Haggling is an integral part of the experience and is expected, but be sure to offer a fair price.

It is also possible to arrange guided tours of areas of the Kenyan capital where tourists might not otherwise venture. If you want to do something a little different that can have a positive impact during your trip to Nairobi, you might consider volunteering a little time at Oloo’s Children Centre. The school provides education to some of the city’s poorest children and depends on charitable contributions.

Eating in Nairobi

While prices for dining in Nairobi might be much lower than in other world capitals, it’s still possible to find restaurants serving traditional Kenyan cuisine at the upper end of the scale. There are many more restaurants serving food aimed at tourists with a more modest budget, though.

If you want to try authentic Kenyan food, then order a plate full of Ugali, a cornmeal paste often served with stew, or Githeri, which consists mainly of beans and corn, or Wali WA Nazi, a tasty rice dish flavoured with grated coconut.

Shopping in Nairobi

The Masaai Market is held at different locations in the city over the course of a week. It is generally as follows: Wednesday at Capital Centre, Thursday at Nakumatt Junction Shopping Mall, Friday at the Village Market, Saturday at the High Court carpark and Sunday at the Yaya Centre.

Other shopping destinations to explore when travelling to Nairobi include The Sarit Centre and Biashara Street.
