Book a flight to Larnaca from Bahrain with Qatar Airways

Larnaca is one of the oldest, continually-inhabited cities in the world, and when you book a flight to Larnaca with Qatar Airways you’ll experience a beautiful Mediterranean coastal resort as well as an historic city. People have been living here for six thousand years and there are numerous sights and activities to enjoy. When you fly to Larnaca you can walk everywhere and take things easy whilst soaking up the Eastern Mediterranean sun.

Tourist attractions

Despite its justified reputation as a sun-soaked paradise, there are plenty of cultural attractions to keep you occupied on your trip to Larnaca. The churches of St Lazarus and Faneromeni, for example, have interesting Byzantine architectural features.

The renowned Hala Sultan Tekke, a sacred Muslim shrine, dating back to Ottoman times and is attractively located on the edge of the Larnaca Salt Lake. If your trip to Larnaca is scheduled for any time between November and March, you’ll have a chance to witness the flocks of pink flamingos that descend on the lake at that time.

Leisure activities

Apart from strolling around the charming Foinikoudes promenade on the seafront which leads to the 12th century Byzantine Caste, and the nearby Old Town with its unique architectural and cultural heritage, a trip to Larnaca should include a few additional activities. The town attracts international divers as it is close to the wreck of the Zenobia. This cargo ship sank in 42 metres of water and is easily accessible if you hire some basic diving equipment.

However, you may need at least a PADI open water certificate before you dive, and some operators will not allow you to dive on the wreck without the appropriate Wreck Diving licence.

If you don’t quite feel up to that, pay a visit to the WOW Action Park for family fun. The park specialises in entertaining kids up to 12 years old, and there is a wide selection of food also on offer here.

Eating in Larnaca

The best way to find a good place to dine in Larnaca is to take a leisurely stroll along the beachfront. You’ll know you’ve struck gold when you come across a venue occupied by Cypriots rather than tourists! This will guarantee good food. Look out for “sheftalia”, traditional lamb meatballs that are popular throughout Larnaca.

Meat and potatoes (“souvla”)is another traditional Cypriot dish but because of the large ex-patriot population in the city, you will also find plenty of restaurants specialising in European-style dishes as well as more local food.

Shopping in Larnaca

Cyprus is famous for its traditional crafts, but you usually have to get out of Larnaca itself to access the best of these. Lefkara for example is a local village that is famous for its hand-crafted silverware and lace products. If you’re travelling to Larnaca for jewellery, you’ll not be disappointed either, because jewellers are abundant in and around the town.

The best handmade jewellers in Larnaca can be found in Pavlou Valsamaki near the St Lazarus church and are famous for their Greek and Italian settings for semi-precious stones.

Cultural considerations

Cyprus is laid back and friendly and it can seem to the visitor that everyone here knows everyone else. Cypriots are polite and can be formal, especially when addressing elderly people.

When you travel to Larnaca, you should dress conservatively when visiting any religious building, and it will be greatly appreciated if you shake hands with a smile when greeting natives.
