Known as the ‘Garden City’, it has a history stretching back over 4,000 years and is one of the most beautiful locations in the country.
If you’re keen on swimming you’ll not be disappointed on your trip to Abu Dhabi. All the hotels have their own beaches and equipment is available for rent. Outside the city you can go on a desert safari and indulge in some ‘dune bashing’ in a 4X4.
One of the big attractions here is the Camel Race Track, where you can visit the paddocks as well as watch the races. This makes for a great day out as there are plenty of refreshments available too. Races are held on Thursdays and Fridays in winter.
Indian and Chinese food is much in evidence in Abu Dhabi. Vegetarian food is especially prominent, and vegans are well catered for too.
When travelling to Abu Dhabi for shopping you’ll quickly discover that there’s a huge variety on offer. International chain stores rub shoulders with vast malls, and fashion items are especially well represented.
Abu Dhabi has become a popular centre for shopping, and the variety of goods on offer ranges from the ‘cheap and cheerful’ tourist trinkets through to high-end luxury goods. For the latter, head to Gold Souk in Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre. For a more traditional experience, the market of Souk Al Bawadi is home to more than 50 shops selling traditional Arab items and souvenirs. For the ultimate in luxury retail, visit The Galleria on Al Marayah Island, which has 130 of the world’s top branded outlets under one roof.
