Don’t be alarmed if you hear a boom at midday during your trip to Cape Town; this is just the noonday gun up on Signal Hill, one of the most popular locations for visitors who want to get a panoramic view of the city and surrounding countryside. At 350m high, its summit gives you an uninterrupted vista that stretches for miles. Originally the lookout point for Cape Town’s early settlers, Signal Hill is now part of the Table Mountain National Park.
Throughout the city you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to attractions. You can choose from The Castle of Good Hope (the oldest colonial era building in South Africa) through to the Bo-Kaap Museum, the exquisite art collection at the South African National Gallery, or the tranquil beauty of the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
To discover more about South Africa’s most famous son and what inspired him to become such a prominent campaigner for peace and justice, visit Robben Island where you can see where Nelson Mandela spent nearly three decades incarcerated as a political prisoner. However, if you do want to visit the island then it’s best to plan ahead well in advance, as tickets are snapped up quickly.
South Africa is well known for its array of leisure activities – from safaris to spot some of Africa’s most iconic animals, to the adrenaline-pumping experience of swimming with sharks off the coast. During your trip to Cape Town you should take a cable car ride up Table Mountain to fully appreciate the astonishing views on offer.
One truly spectacular way of seeing the entire region laid out below you is to take a helicopter trip that flies over the city and Table Mountain and then down to Table Bay. If conservation interests you then guided tours will introduce you to the region’s baboons, or take you deep into the bush at the Aquila Game Reserve.
For theatre lovers the Armchair Theatre puts on some eclectic shows, while the Masque Theatre gives you a more traditional African cultural experience.
Cape Town is renowned for the quality of its food. Seafood is particularly good here and the best restaurants for this are located on the V&A Waterfront. Long Street has many fine dining venues and up-market cafés, or if you’re looking for a quieter spot, head for Lower Main Road in Observatory, away from the crowds.
Dishes to try while you are visiting Cape Town include linefish such as yellowtail, cape salmon, kingklip, kabeljou for seafood lovers, and for meat-eaters the local game such as eland and springbok.
When travelling to Cape Town primarily for shopping, you’ll find that the best outlets for designer goods and labels are in the many malls of the city; Bayside Centre, Blue Route Mall and Cavendish Square are amongst the best of these. On the slopes of Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront is a hugely popular entertainment and shopping area, or try Greenmarket Square for a more eclectic mix of local crafts, jewellery and clothes for an authentic momento of your trip to Cape Town.
