Berlin is Germany’s capital and when you book a flight to Berlin with Qatar Airways, you’ll find yourself in a city packed with cultural interest. Although badly damaged during the closing stages of the Second World War, Berlin has been completely reconstructed and is now one of the most vibrant modern cities in Europe.
Many of the top attractions are in the city centre and easily reached on foot during the course of a day’s visit. Fly to Berlin and immerse yourself in one of Europe’s great cities.
Berlin is especially rich in museums and on your trip to Berlin, you shouldn’t miss the Museen Charlottenburg complex and the Kulturforum near the famous Potsdamer Platz. There are also many private art galleries such as the Art Centre Berlin Friedrichstrasse, and historic buildings like the Berliner Dom and Marienkirche, home to Berlin’s highest spire. The Brandenburg Gate is an iconic monument at the heart of the city.
Any trip to Berlin should also include a visit to the Siegessäule victory column in the Tiergarten. At 60 metres high, it offers panoramic views of the city. The Kollhoff Tower in Potsdamer Platz also has a good observation deck.
There are plenty of things for you to do during a trip to Berlin. There are various tours of the city, and for a pleasant walk, take a stroll around the Tiergarten, the biggest park here, or Viktoriapark, which has some of the finest views across Berlin. There is also a popular beach at ‘Berlin’s bath tub’, the Wannsee.
If you’re a fan of the theatre, you’ll be spoilt for choice when you book a trip to Berlin. The most popular classical theatre is the Deutsches Theatre, with contemporary acts in the Berliner Ensemble. English language shows can be seen in the English Theatre Berlin. There are also four opera houses, the most prestigious being the Deutsche Oper.
Dining out in Berlin is relatively inexpensive when compared to other parts of Western Europe. The best area for eating is Hackescher Markt on Oranienburger Strasse. With many small restaurants featuring old Art Deco furniture, it is particularly pleasant in the evenings.
For 5-star dining, head to City West, where you’ll find some top quality restaurants, particularly on Potsdamer Platz.
Should you be travelling to Berlin with shopping as your priority, you’re in for a real treat. One of the main shopping streets here is Tauentzienstrasse, which specialises in luxury goods. Just north of the Hackesche Markt is a popular area for up-market shopping, while Prenzlauer Berg has many good designer shops.
There are also many large shopping malls in Berlin that house hundreds of smaller shops, such as Alexa in Alexanderplatz and the Ring Centre in Friedrichshain.
Germans have a reputation for being rather formal, and there’s some truth in this. Shake hands when introduced, rather than hugging. You should also maintain eye contact when talking to someone. Keep a distance, too, as Germans value their private space. Use the greeting ‘good day’ rather than asking how they are which will elicit an account of personal problems.
All shops are shut on Sundays by law. Remember too when you travel to Berlin that you can’t use a credit card in many stores, so get some cash out before going shopping.
Qatar Airways flights to Berlin arrive at Tegel International Airport.
