Tourist attractions

On any trip to Yangon the most important monument to see is the Shwedagon Pagoda on the top of Singuttara Hill. At night it’s lit up by floodlights, and four covered walkways lead up to it. The Maha Ganda Bell was left by the British after the First Burmese War because it was too heavy to take away. The Defence Services Museum is also worth a visit.

The National Museum is another must-see, as on your trip to Yangon you’ll want to find out about Myanmar’s history and culture. It houses many Burmese artefacts, including the last Konbaung Dynasty regalia.

Leisure activities

To get a good idea of real, daily life in and around the city on your trip to Yangon, hop on the Circular Train. This is a British colonial style train that will take you on a three-hour journey of the city and its suburbs. Also take the Dallah Ferry across to a traditional village, enjoying watermelon and tea on the way.

For a spot of Burmese culture, the National Theatre hosts special dance displays. There are also nightly shows in traditional dress at the Karaweik Palace.

Eating in Yangon

There are many Thai, Japanese, Western and Korean restaurants in Yangon, reflecting the multi-ethnic nature of the country.

Chinese and Indian cuisine is especially prominent, and also venues that specialise in traditional Shan dishes. The local Bamar food is extremely pungent and is served with rice and raw vegetables.

Shopping in Yangon

When travelling to Yangon for shopping, visitors are usually after precious gems, handicrafts and clothes, and there is plenty of all three to choose from.

There are lots of different vendors selling souvenirs in Chinatown, and Bogyoke Aung San Market is good for handicrafts such as lacquer ware and wood carvings. Finally, for Burmese antiquities and gems, head for Shwedagon Pagoda.

Cultural considerations

When you travel to Yangon wear low-key attire and cover your arms and legs. This is especially important when visiting historic pagodas and temples, which you certainly will as Yangon has so many stunning ones.

You may often have to sit on the floor at a low table for meals, except in the plusher restaurants.
